The “Management of Wandering and Missing Patients” policy may be viewed by computers on the LMC network at (LINK)

As soon as it is suspected that a confused or “High-Risk for Wandering” patient may be missing:

  1. Immediately page a Code Purple by calling 2222
  • All hospital employees should monitor exit doors located nearest to their departments
  • Staff should NOT leave their unit to search other floors, the lobby, cafeteria, etc. Public Safety will take charge of the search.
  • Refrain from discussing the incident with anyone other than authorities

Upon return of the patient to the inpatient unit or treatment area:

  1. Notify Public Safety
  2. A nurse is to complete a medical assessment
  3. Notify physician, family any other contacted persons and agencies
  4. Complete an Occurrence Report
  5. Implement Wandering Precaution, if not already performed prior
