  • Clear the hallways of ALL equipment
  • Make sure all smoke doors (corridor doors) close on your unit.  If they do not close automatically, close them by hand and notify Engineering Services at extension 2157
  • If you are on a patient unit, close all patient room doors
  • Assist activated unit as needed in moving patients or visitors

(At scene of fire)

  • (R)ESCUE ALL PERSONS IN IMMEDIATE DANGER TO SAFETY
  • (A)CTIVATE MANUAL PULL ALARM/DIAL 5671 AND ANNOUNCE, “CODE RED” AND THE LOCATION THREE (3) TIMES
  • (C)ONTAIN/CLOSE ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS
  • (E)XTINGUISH THE FIRE

If there is danger of the fire spreading, remove patients from adjoining areas

  • Inform visitors of the situation.  Depending on the situation, have visitors stay in the room with the patient (door closed); leave the building; and/or help with the evacuation, if feasible.
  • Patient evacuation will be on order of Authority in Charge only.  Follow Fire Exit Diagrams posted on the walls near the nurses’ stations
  • Explain the situation to the patients calmy.  DO NOT uses the word “fire” in an alarming manner
